HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the image format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's based on the HEIF standard and stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG while keeping similar quality. The trade-off is compatibility: many websites, Windows apps, and older programs still can't open a .heic file, which is why converting to JPG or PNG is so common.
Apple switched to HEIC to save storage — you can keep about twice as many photos in the same space. HEIC also supports extras like Live Photos, depth maps, and wider color. The downside is that these files don't travel well outside the Apple ecosystem, so sharing or uploading often means converting them first.
If your photos stay on your iPhone, HEIC is fine and saves space. Convert to JPG when you need to share, upload, edit, or print somewhere that doesn't understand HEIC — which still covers a lot of the web. JPG is the safest choice for compatibility; pick PNG when you need transparency, or WebP for the smallest web-ready files.
