PNG · avoid another lossy encoding step
PNG stores the decoded image losslessly, but converting a compressed HEIC photo to PNG does not restore missing detail or make it sharper. For ordinary photos it can create a substantially larger file than JPG or WebP.
- Choose PNG if the receiving editor or workflow requires it, not simply because you want a smaller upload. The quality slider is not a useful PNG file-size control; browser PNG encoding does not use it like JPG quality.
- Resizing changes the image even when the output format is lossless. PNG supports transparency, but conversion does not automatically remove a photo’s background.
